Bužim Fortress

Bužim's municipality identifies the old town as a fortified settlement documented in 1334. Its surviving architecture includes an upper stronghold and a broader defensive circuit, with powerful towers and later artillery adaptations. The municipal account emphasises substantial changes during the fifteenth century and occupation between the upper and lower defences in the nineteenth century. The wooden mosque below the fortress is a separate nearby heritage building. Exact construction phases and the form of missing buildings need individual source review.

Architecture & evidence

Round corner tower ruins

The older square enclosure is distinguished by round corner towers. Their open, uneven shells are shown without hypothetical roofs or complete medieval battlements.

Outer defensive circuit

The heritage institute records a later outer wall associated with Juraj Mikulčić's work. This second circuit separates Bužim's older castle from the later defensive perimeter.

Internal building remains

The enclosure's later religious and military uses left additional remains. Low walls indicate the interior footprint without inventing a standing mosque or its lost fittings.
