Bijela Stijena combines an older enclosure and an eastern artillery addition dated to 1771. The heritage account documents contrasting wall thicknesses and differently shaped corner platforms. The former settlement of Stina appears in records from 1330, although that reference does not prove that its castle already existed.

History and context

Which part dates to 1771?

The dated gateway inscription belongs to the New Town, built east of the older defenses. Its thick walls and corner artillery platforms contrast with the thinner curtains of the older enclosure.

A settlement is not a construction date

The 1330 reference concerns Villa Stina; it does not establish that these fortifications existed then. The heritage account also distinguishes the later mosque from the medieval enclosure. Several periods occupy the same site.

Small details reveal rebuilding

The institute’s architectural description records carefully worked blocks at the older gateway, including a carved bird. It also notes reused stone near the southeast tower, interpreted by Šefik Bešlagić as fragments of stećci. These details offer a closer scale of reading than the overall fortress outline: materials could be moved and buildings altered long after their first construction. Look for differences in stone size, workmanship and openings when studying photographs. Reused material is evidence of another building history, but does not by itself date the wall that contains it.

The heritage account records a later mosque within the older enclosure. Exterior proportions are sourced; detailed openings and condition are interpretive.
