Bjelaj Castle

Bjelaj combines a compact medieval southern court and a much larger northern Ottoman enclosure. Its first written mention dates to 1495. The municipal architectural account describes a court over 40 metres long and about 35 metres wide, with a round northwest tower rising about 16 metres. The southern wall has collapsed; the later outer enclosure survives mostly as low western fragments. These unequal states of preservation are retained in the model.

Architecture & evidence

Massive northwest tower

The municipal account gives this round tower a height of about sixteen metres. The open shell and its position follow that description; masonry detail is estimated.

Eastern arched openings

Four large arched openings are documented in the eastern curtain. The opposite southern wall has collapsed and is left open in this study.

Northern Ottoman enclosure

The added outer court extended roughly 110 metres north. Only low western wall fragments are presented; its lost eastern wall and former mosque are not rebuilt.
