Gračanica near Cazin is an isolated rectangular fortification, distinct from Soko near the town of Gračanica. The local culture and tourism centre describes uneven surviving masonry and a northwestern entrance. Its medieval date is inferred rather than established by a foundation document.

History and context

A tower without an outer court

The Cazin centre describes a rectangular tower built with local Liskovac stone and no surrounding enclosure. Openings survive in its walls. Its narrow hilltop determined a compact building rather than the sequence of courtyards seen at larger castles.

Is it the historical Gradac?

The identification with Gradac in sixteenth-century reports is proposed, not certain. The centre likewise treats stories about tunnels to Pećigrad as folklore. Both the documentary identification and the supposed tunnel connection remain unconfirmed.

An archaeological neighbourhood

Cazin’s cultural centre records a 1979 investigation near Gračanica that found remains of a medieval church and a fragment of an ancient funerary monument with relief figures. These finds broaden the setting of the tower beyond its military outline. They do not prove that the tower itself is ancient, nor that every nearby feature belonged to one building phase. For this site, location is essential: distinguish evidence recovered near the tower from masonry belonging to the tower. The surrounding archaeological landscape may illuminate its community while leaving its exact foundation date unresolved.

Defensive openings

The fortification has no surrounding obor. The hollow interior is left roofless and without conjectural furnishings.
