Pećigrad preserves the relationship between a compact earlier tower and a later Ottoman fort. The heritage institute associates the castle with Ivan Tuz and subsequent noble owners. Its later frontier role brought a larger defensive enclosure nearby. The scene keeps the detached tower visibly separate from that expanded complex.

History and context

From a small guard to a frontier fortress

The regional institute records the departure of the royal guard in 1577 and an Ottoman garrison from 1635. Later, Pećigrad belonged to the Ostrožac captaincy. Its growth into an artillery position was a change of scale, not merely a new owner occupying an unchanged tower.

Why are there two forts?

The compact earlier tower could not provide the space of the later enclosure. Published accounts agree on an eighteenth-century expansion but differ on its year: the heritage institute gives 1786, while the Cazin centre’s architectural account gives 1768. We retain the broader period rather than choosing an unsupported exact date.

A name carried through inheritance

Pećigrad’s earlier name, Peći Mihajla Turka, preserves a complicated family succession. The heritage institute recounts that Jurčec Gusić’s widow adopted the Krupa castellan Mihajlo Turk after her son was captured. His surname in this account is a personal name, not a reliable shortcut for dating Ottoman rule at the site. Following these changes of ownership reveals the castle as inheritable property as well as a military position. It also explains why different names in historical accounts can describe the same fortified place rather than separate castles.

Continued occupation

A later mosque and settlement occupy the fortified area. The model distinguishes this occupation from the earlier military tower.
