Kotor's fortress stands above the Vrbanja at Kotor Varoš. A University of Banja Luka landscape study identifies the remains, popularly associated with Hrvoje Vukčić, and their relationship to the settlement below. These ruins are distinct from the much larger coastal fortifications of Kotor in Montenegro. Their historical, visual and archaeological value requires preservation and a site-specific reconstruction.

A lordship in the Vrbanja valley
The University of Banja Luka landscape study records Hrvoje’s 1412 grant of Kotor and the Vrbanja district to his wife Jelena Nelipčić. This links the fortress with control of a wider territory and its villages, beyond the walls themselves.
Names and tradition
Bobas and Bobac are recorded alternative names. Stories that Hrvoje founded the castle are identified as oral tradition in the study. They should be distinguished from the documented grant and from Kotor’s surviving architectural remains.
Looking toward the Vrbanja
The regional tourism organisation places Kotor above the Vrbanja’s left bank and connects its later defensive role with the Jajce Banate. The river valley is therefore a useful starting point for understanding the position, rather than concentrating only on the tower. The same source explicitly treats underground passages and dungeons as unconfirmed tradition. The broad mapped castle grounds are not treated as a continuous high curtain. Scattered low wall traces leave the archaeological uncertainty visible.
Grounds above the Vrbanja
The model preserves a broad open site relationship rather than a complete imagined town. This Kotor is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, distinct from the coastal city in Montenegro.
