Kreševo’s Bedem is the ruined fortified town above the historic settlement of Podkreševo.

Bedem preserves the archaeological remains of Kreševo’s fortified upper and lower town. Its history is connected with the mining and trading settlement below. The municipality announced the start of a new excavation campaign in July 2026; the digital study cannot represent unpublished discoveries.

A royal document
King Stjepan Tomaš issued a charter to Dubrovnik at Kreševo on 3 September 1444, confirming privileges. The municipality places the town within the medieval Visoko–Fojnica–Kreševo economic and political network.
A defended approach
The municipal description identifies an upper fortress, a lower enclosure and two detached towers before the western entrance. Ditches added further obstacles. A cistern stood within the walls; a proposed palace location remains an archaeological question.
The fortress and Podkreševo
Kreševo’s eastern tower faced the basin occupied by Podkreševo, the settlement below the castle. The municipal description thus connects the stronghold with a lived-in valley, rather than presenting an isolated royal refuge. It also records a passage between the upper fortress and the southern lower enclosure, whose outer wall had five substantial towers. Following those relationships is more informative than treating every wall as part of a single courtyard. From the model’s wider view, distinguish the summit, the defended slope and the town below as different parts of one historical setting.

Architecture & evidence
Western approach
Two corner-tower remains flank the approach. The former defensive ditches require a surveyed terrain revision.
Eastern terminal tower
The narrowed upper enclosure ends in a small tower foundation. No conjectural palace is added.
Lower-town remains
Five southern tower positions are interpreted; the southeastern remnant is taller. Most enclosing walls remain low.
