Vidoški Fortress

Vidoški rises above Stolac on a limestone hill overlooking the Bregava and Vidovo field. Its scale reflects many phases of fortification rather than a single castle-building campaign. The municipality describes lower and upper fortified areas, a central plateau and a long approach route. Medieval remains are difficult to distinguish: archaeological work in 1976 did not identify clear surviving medieval structures, possibly because later construction covers them. Ottoman repairs and enlargement followed the changed frontier after 1699. Austro-Hungarian engineers then repaired the old fort and built a modern fortress above it in the late nineteenth century. These successive military landscapes matter when interpreting the walls today. The historic area was designated a national monument in 2003, preserving a layered record above the living town.
