Toričan stands above Varošluk near Turbe. Archaeologist Đoko Mazalić associates the castle with the nobleman Batalo but cautions against several historical identifications applied to it. The Travnik museum publishes dedicated research on Lašva and Toričan. The model presents low separated remains, not an intact residential castle.

Batalo and the nearby tomb
Mazalić’s conservation study identifies Toričan as Batalo’s castle and places his tomb nearby. Batalo held the court office of tepčija in the late fourteenth century. The tomb provides an important connection to a named person beyond the anonymous ruins.
Why historical names need care
Mazalić rejects attaching a 1413 account about another Toričan to this site. Similar names in old documents do not automatically identify the same castle; location and political context must also agree.
What a conservation report can recover
Mazalić’s study records work on Batalo’s nearby tomb in 1950, after decades of damage following its discovery in 1915. The surviving sarcophagus and displaced stećak were treated as distinct parts of the burial monument. This gives Toričan a second kind of evidence besides castle walls: the material history of commemoration and conservation. It also warns against treating every old drawing as exact. Mazalić checked earlier measurements against the remains and corrected them, showing how a familiar published description can be revised through direct examination rather than simply repeated.
